Another Awesome Wednesday Night Race
Sleek surfski’s and light weight paddle blades slice through the water silently as the sounds labored breathing and the occasional bumping of paddle-on-paddle, boat-on-boat or paddle-on-boat fill the air. It is Wednesday Night… and I am surrounded by my race posse having an awesome time! There are 7 of us, and we are in our tightest race I can remember. Reivers and Larry B are leading the little peloton. Mike G is up and on the left, drafting Reivers bow wake I think. Paul and Duncan and I are in the second row, watching to see who is going to make a move… and ready to pounce. Off to the right is Kim. He makes a move about 1 1/2-miles into the 3+ mile course and I hop on his stern, but, Larry and Reivers match his move and we fall back into formation. Then, it’s Larry B. Then Reivers. Reivers goes big. Larry B grabs onto his stern wake as Reivers picks up a blistering pace and holds it. I fall in behind Larry. The occasional bump of someone hitting my stern lets me know the formation continues now in a straight line behind us. Someone yells ‘Sorry, Heather’ as they bump my stern again. Duncan? Maybe Paul? We are in the final ¾-mile, holding on to Reivers for dear life. Did he stop for Espresso somewhere? Geez! Then, we pull up along an OC1. We are about 100 yards from the final turn, a 90 degree turn around a wood pylon… many races are made or lost here. Reivers politely falls in behind the OC1, apparently planning to let the OC1 take the turn first. Larry follows suit. Not so polite, at least not while racing, I decide 100 yards is plenty of time to bust a move. “There’s Heather”, Larry says, not so happy, as my bow matches his as we arrive at the turn. He is more polite then me and doesn’t try to squish me into the pylon. Thanks Larry. We race for the finish, Reivers arriving first, then me and Larry. Paul comes next.
Lots of congratulating, watch checking and ego pumping follows.
Another awesome day at the Wednesday Night Races!
