Ski to Sea 2010: A Peak Experience!!!
One of the greatest pleasures for a racer is when THE race you train to peak for unfolds as an absolute PEAK EXPERIENCE!!!
That’s exactly what happened for both Heather and I yesterday, and our respective Whatcom County teams in the 2010 Ski to Sea.
Heather’s team, Kulshan Cycles, won the Whatcom County Women’s Division for the 4th year in a row, finishing 24th overall in a time of 6 hours, 56 minutes, 44 seconds.
And my team, Beaver’s Tree Service, got back on top of the podium by beating the defending champs, RunningShoes.com, after a neck-and-neck, lead-swapping race that had all the drama of a Hollywood thriller!!! We finished 7th overall in a time of 6 hours, 3 minutes, 19 seconds.
What made the day extra special is that, for the first time in our history of racing the Ski to Sea, Heather and I both earned Top Gun honors for being the fastest overall man and woman on water.
This marks Heather’s 4th consecutive year as Top Gun female, which she earned with a time of 47 minutes, 57 seconds. And this was my first year ever as Top Gun, paddling the course in a time of 43 minutes 3 seconds.
Heather’s Kulshan Cycles teammate, Nicola Mann, also won Top Gun honors as fastest woman on the mountain bike leg, ripping it up in a time of 56 minutes 31 seconds.
The partying last night was off the chain, migrating from the awards stage to Jalapeno’s Mexican Cantina to the RunningShoes.com retail store on State St! We’ll take one more good day off… then the training for Ski to Sea 2011 begins!
Awesome racing, everyone!
